Alabama’s football landscape is getting a boost with the launch of two new junior college prep teams — the Birmingham Bears and the Alabama Rays — both joining the growing National Junior College Prep (NJCP) Football League. These programs are designed to give overlooked athletes, transfers, and recent high school graduates another shot to stay on the field and get back on college recruiting radars.
The Birmingham Bears are already building momentum with the hiring of Birmingham native Eric Phillips as head coach. Phillips brings experience developing scholarship-level talent and helping players earn opportunities at the next level, which fits perfectly with the program’s goal of being a developmental pathway for athletes chasing scholarships.
Alongside them, the Alabama Rays give the state a second NJCP option, expanding opportunities for players who need game film, development, or exposure. The league itself focuses on helping athletes compete in real games, build recruiting visibility, and continue their football careers while pursuing scholarships.
For Alabama prospects who may have slipped through the cracks — or just need one more season to prove themselves — these programs could become a valuable bridge between high school football and college offers. And for recruiters, media, and scouts across the Southeast, it means even more talent staying in-state and continuing to develop.
